What is Empower 2017?

Have you ever wondered what college is like? Are you interested in pursuing a career in STEM but still unsure what major to chose? Want to engage in hands on workshops that teach engineering principles? Every year the Society of Hispanice Professional Engineers at UCSD hosts the Empower High School Conference to inspire high school students to follow a career in the STEM field. At Empower, participants will have the opportunity to network with UCSD students and faculty, engage in hands-on engineering workshops, and also learn about the many opportunities that a STEM degree can provide. Did we also mention that breakfast and lunch will be provided?

About SHPE @ UCSD

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers chapter at UC San Diego was established in 1986. The purpose was originally to create a medium in which the small population of Hispanic/Latino students studying engineering at the university could network with other Hispanic engineers in the area. It was soon apparent that networking was just one of the many benefits that SHPE would provide to students. The role of the chapter has evolved to where it currently serves as a way for students to receive tips and encouragement for academic and professional success.

When is the event?


Empower High School Conference 2017 will take place Saturday, April 22rd, 2017 from 8 AM - 4 PM at the Jacob’s School of Engineering at UC San Diego.

Do I have to register to attend?


Yes! We will be selecting participants for this year's conference based on those who submit the form. We will have a maximum capacity of 200 students so the sooner you register, the better. Currently all spots have been filled, however, we have opened a waitlist. Shall spots open up once again, students will be notified via email and be removed from the waitlist.

Can I leave early?


We ask that you stay for the entire event since we want to be respectful to our guest speakers and workshop leaders. If you have to leave early due to an emergency, we ask that your parent or guardian be present to sign you out.

What will the conference consist of?


The conference will consist of hands-on activities, engineering workshops, guest speakers, and lots of interaction between you and UCSD students.

How old do I have to be to participate?


Registration is open to students in grades 8 through 12.

Can my little sibling come?


If your sibling is in grade 8 or above, yes. Just make sure to register separately.

Can my parents come?


Your parent is more than welcome to come! This year we will be holding parent workshops for them to participate in.

Will there be food?


Yes, free continental breakfast and lunch will be provided! If you think this won't be enough then make sure to bring snacks.

I have special dietary needs. What should I do?


Let us know when you register. Make sure to fill out this portion of the registration form and let us know how we can accommodate to you.

Will there be transportation?


Unfortunately we cannot provide transportation, so you will have to coordinate how you travel to and from the conference. Note that parking on campus is FREE on weekends.

What if I don’t know anyone?


Don't worry! You will meet people there who share similar interests as you! Our many volunteers will also be glad to get to know you.

What should I wear to the event?


Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You will receive a t-shirt upon arrival and we will ask that you please wear it during the conference.

I am not Hispanic, can I still attend Empower 2017?


Empower 2017 is open to everyone and we encourage all who are intertested to come check out the many activities we have in store for students from grades 8 through 12!

Where can I get a copy of the waivers?


You can get both waivers here. Don't forget to print and have your parent/guadian sign both of them! Don't forget to bring them to Empower!! We cannot allow you to participate in the conference without both waivers signed by your parents if you are under 18 years of age. We will have a few extra waivers in case you forget yours at home, however, your parent must be with you at registration so he/she can sign them for you!

Below are the links for you to register for Empower 2017! If your parent/guardian plans to attend as well, they can click on the parent registration button to sign up (parent attendance is optional, so only fill out parent registration if parent/guardian is planning to attend). Also, please do not forget to print, fill out, and bring these two waivers to Empower 2017!

As of now all of the spots for Empower 2017 have been filled. This event is only for confirmed guests. We have opened a waitlist and if spots open up again we will email students and move them off the waitlist accordingly. Registering here will add you to the waitlist.

Where Can I Park?


Parents can park in lot P502 (shown below). Check-in and breakfast will be held at Jacbos Hall Engineering 1 at 8am.
